1867 US buys Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million
 

1941 The US Army Air Force is established, replacing the Army Air Corps
 

1955 The AFL and CIO agree to combine names for a merged group
 

1963 The United States and the Soviet Union agree to establish a hot line between Washington and Moscow
 

1967 Boxer Muhammad Ali was convicted in Houston of violating Selective Service laws by refusing to be drafted. Ali’s conviction was ultimately overturned by the Supreme Court.
